Estimate your item profit
USD estimate before shared overhead and income tax. Enter fees yourself; this is not an automatic eBay fee quote. Your entries stay in this page and are not saved.
The short answer
Enter the item sale price and shipping charged, then subtract purchase cost, selling fees, postage, supplies, refunds, and other direct costs. The result estimates item contribution before shared business overhead and income tax. Fees are entered by you, not calculated from an assumed eBay rate.
Use your actual costs or explicit assumptions
Before a purchase, enter a realistic sale estimate and the costs you expect. After a sale, use the actual transaction figures. Include selling and promoted listing fees in Marketplace fees, and record refunds or other item-specific costs in the corresponding fields.
Exclude marketplace-collected sales tax from the sale proceeds entered here. The calculator is not an eBay fee quote and does not automatically know your category, account terms, or promotional rate.
Understand the three results
Item contribution is the entered proceeds less the direct costs. Contribution margin divides that result by sale price plus buyer shipping, using the gross entered proceeds before the refund field. Purchase-cost ROI divides contribution by purchase cost.
A zero revenue entry makes margin undefined. A zero purchase cost makes purchase-cost ROI undefined; it does not create an infinite return. Negative contribution is displayed as a loss rather than being hidden.
Avoid counting a cost twice
If your fee number already includes a particular charge, do not enter it again as another cost. If you use an expected refund allowance, do not also subtract the same amount elsewhere.
This calculator keeps shared overhead out of the item result. To understand overall business profit, also account for expenses such as subscriptions and other shared operating costs. It does not determine taxable income.
Keep the estimate connected to the real sale
After selling, compare the estimate with actual fees, shipping, and purchase cost. The difference can reveal an assumption to improve on the next sourcing trip.
GrimLister can keep recorded purchase costs and sale information with the item, including costs added after the sale. The free calculator runs only in this page and does not save or send the values you enter.
Common questions
Does this calculate the exact eBay fee?
No. Enter the fee from your transaction or your own current estimate. Fees vary, so no universal percentage is assumed.
Is the result my taxable profit?
No. It is a direct item contribution estimate before shared overhead and income tax. Your records and applicable accounting rules determine tax reporting.
